What is Kerygma Conference and Why You Should Attend

The Kerygma Conference (KCON) is a once-in-a-year event where people across the country gather together to learn about, worship, and praise God. It is an event organized by the Light of Jesus Family founded by popular Filipino evangelist Bro. Bo Sanchez. The first Kerygma Conference was held in 2007. This year is very special as this will be the 10th Kerygma Conference!  This event is open to everyone.

Just a little etymology. Kerygma is from the ancient Greek word κῆρυγμα kẽrugma used in the New Testament for “preaching.” It is related to the Greek verb κηρύσσω kērússō, literally meaning “to cry or proclaim as a herald” and being used in the sense of “to proclaim, announce, preach”.

With this definition from Wikipedia, we could now understand why this event is filled with powerful talks and inspiring messages from different pastors, preachers and industry experts.

Last year’s KCON2015 was held last November 20-21, with the theme “Coming Home.” Supposedly, it should have been a 4-day event originally slated from Nov 19-22. However, due to road blockages brought about in Metro Manila by the Philippine hosting of the APEC Summit, it was moved and squeezed into 2 days.

That's me with the FREE book that was given to all of the attendees of last year's KCON!

That’s me with the FREE book that was given to all of the attendees of last year’s KCON! I think this was given because of the sudden change in schedule that affected also the schedule of some attendees.

It was my first time to attend the event last year and I was actually saddened that it was moved and shortened. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience, the renewal, and the homey feeling of being in the happiest place on earth. So much so that I encourage everyone to attend and experience it first-hand.

While the event is not exclusive and is open for anyone interested, you would need to buy  a ticket to gain entrance. You may opt for either a regular or a premium ticket. The difference of the  latter from the former is that the premium ticket gives you the added bonus of reserved seating in any of your 9 chosen breakout classes, plus a free “Coming Home” t-shirt.

Since it was my first time to attend, I just bought a regular ticket, which costs Php 2,000 (as against the Php 3,000 price of the premium ticket).

However, I highly recommend buying the premium ticket next time. Not because I didn’t enjoy my seat with the regular ticket but because you’ll be more attentive and eager to learn if you’re in front; plus, you’ll get to have an easier time and better opportunity to have your photo taken with the speaker. I was luckily able to have some of my photos taken with 3 of the speakers; well I guess it also depends on willpower and strategy!

There’s also a much cheaper ticket being offered to the youth since they have a separate KCON for the youth. The young people could enjoy the conference at a really much lower price. So I encourage you to join while you’re young.

The Kerygma Conference starts with worship, then segues to a plenary talk. It breaks out into breakout classes for specific talks and then finally dovetails back for another plenary talk, all with worship filled in-between.

What is a breakout class like at KCON?? Breakout classes are like mini-seminars. You get to choose 9 out of the 46 classes available, with wide-ranging topics on business, leadership, wealth, family, and the church. There’s also a an additional special class available for premium ticket holders on the last day.

Plenary talks, on the other hand, are given by chosen resource speakers to the whole congregation. These speakers are great motivators and give memorable anecdotes and touching lessons  based from their own lives. The plenary talks, for me, are the highlights of the event. That’s just me.

Initially, you’d have to attend  3 breakout classes per day on the first 3 days of the conference. However, since the event was squeezed into 2 days. We attended 6 break out classes on the first day then finished off the remaining 3 breakout classes on the last day. You will really learn a lot from these breakout classes.

This year’s Kerygma Conference will mostly be the same. There will be great speakers like Anthony Pangilinan, Dennis Sy, Chinkee Tan, RJ Ledesma, Jonathan Yabut, Jayson Lo, Dean Pax Lapid, Paulo Tibig and more!

The theme for this year’s conference is called “Forward.” It will be this November 17-20, 2016 at SMX Convention Center at Pasay City Manila.

I suggest you buy your tickets now so that when registration of the breakout classes start, you get to attend the class you want to attend to as this will be on a first-come, first-served registration process. Some classes easily get full.

For the details, classes, speakers, as well as ticket costs, click on the link here.

But if you are unable to go to your desired class and went to another breakout session, don’t worry! Since last year, they have recorded all the classes and have made them available to all attendees! Attendees will be given a link in their registered email address and may download the classes for a limited time for FREE and it is in audio MP3 format. I hope they will also do the same this year.

Why should you attend?

Aside from the breakout classes, the whole event will affect you in a positive way. You will really be inspired, you will really be blessed, and you will realize how lucky you are that you are loved by God regardless of your sins and imperfections. And since it is a gathering, you’ll get to also know many people. You’ll also feel that you are not alone in all your struggles and life’s difficulties. It just feels really good to worship as a community, as one big family, who are daughters and sons of God.

Coming home to God’s invitation, loving embrace, and mercy last year was truly unforgettable. With this year’s theme, “Forward,”

I am very sure that this will be the best KCON yet to date because if we do anything for God and lift up to Him, I am sure, His blessings will come pouring down, He will leave us astounded, He will surprise us, and He will definitely move us forward whatever our situation is!

See you there!

As a bonus:

Below are the 9 breakout classes I’ve chosen from last year’s KCON and some key takeaways from some of these classes:

A. Soul Gym – Justin Fatica

Key Takeaways:

  1. Love God will all your soul, mind and strength
  2. We need to treat people with dignity, respect and honor as how God treats us as his sons/daughters
  3. We need to work out for other people’s suffering
  4. God cannot change the heart of a fake person or a dishonest man.
  5. It is not about how you look but how you love.

B. Theology of Money and Success – Bo Sanchez

C. Millionaire Next Door – Myrna Yao

Key Takeaways:

  1. Learn the ABCs of abundance: Adopt, Build, Calculate
  2. In adopting, don’t be afraid to learn and re-learn; to learn something new on purpose, and to create learning time capsules.
  3. In building, the legacy of a good name is something that will be truly cherished by your children and grandchildren so build a good one! Establish trust by keeping your promises, being honest and having faith in other people. Lastly, strengthen your relationship with your Creator, Family and your Team.
  4. In calculating, count your blessings and be grateful, anticipate MORE blessings as you SHARE and simplify your means to organize your life. Live within them as it allows room for growth and creativity.

D. The Call to Personal Leadership – Dennis Sy

Key Takeaways:

  1. Leaders go beyond on what is expected from them. Who they are this year is different from last year. They should differentiate themselves from others.
  2. As a leader, you must learn how to lead yourself FIRST. You must learn who you are. Remember that who you are in Christ is more important than how the world would think. You are loved by God. You are too legitimate to be a child of God to quit!
  3. As a leader, you should focus on your CALLING. And we are called to be Christians first. Fulfilling our calling vs. maximizing our potential is different. Remember to ask God the calling that He gave you. Don’t walk through every open door. Go where God has called you. Your calling is something what you can do that you cannot delegate.
  4. As a leader, build a team. Don’t lead alone. God’s calling is too dangerous to do it alone. You must be humble enough to lead and to serve. Leadership is relationship. Do not ever sacrifice relationship over success.

E. Taking Out of the Trash – Jojo Apolo

F. Raise the Roof – Selene-Lee Yu

img_20151121_180838

Key Takeaways:

  1. Knowing God is the owner of our business settles three things: What is our role, who gives the directions, and why are we in this business. Who owns your business? Remember that God owns your business. And we are His stewards. We are in this business to glorify God, to provide for our own needs and to express our gifts and our purpose. God appoints His leaders and when He appoints, He anoints. Remember to access the anointing power of the Holy Spirit by praying, listening, obeying, trusting and submitting.
  2. God has a different MBA called the Master’s Business Administration. Jesus is our leader who led us by being a role model, a mentor and a relationship builder.
  3. As stewards, we should remember to pray, plan, mobilize our people, put things in order, empower, pilot, work as partner with faith, and praise God and party.
  4. We should remember to pay our taxes, pay fair wages, pay our debts, manage our debts, share our gains and invest wisely.
  5. Do what is right and God will do what is BEST. Integrity is forged when we choose to do what is right.
  6. Remember to always SEE God’s hand behind every event and remain FAITHFUL.

G. Top of the Class – Scott Friedman

Key Takeaways:

    1. Celebration is acknowledging all the good things you do.
    2. For celebration to be effective, we should always turn on our I-GPS- Inclusivity, Gratitude, Play, and Surprise.
    3. We should honor everyone in our lives. There should be inclusivity or sense of belonging. Everybody is part of the spirit and the community.
    4. We should also be grateful. Happiness is an inside game.  It is not happiness that makes us grateful but is gratefulness that makes us happy.
    5. We should play or live in the present moment. Play starts with a good sense of humor. You have to have the ability to find something funny in your predicaments.  The highest sense of humor is laughing at yourself. And you could only do this if you accept your flaws and imperfections. While the lowest sense of humor is laughing at others’ imperfections.  Remember to take your work seriously but take yourself lightly, as said by John Welsch.
    6. Lastly, do not forget the element of surprise. Pay attention to the pain and pleasure of other people. Know what’s highest in your people’s joy list.

H. Sabi ni Misis, Sabi ni Mister, Sabi ni God – Arun & Lallaine Gogna

img_20151122_102622

Key Takeaways:

    1. Humility is the key to a healthy marriage. The one who usually wins the argument is the one who acts less like Christ. Always ask yourself: Am I like Christ to my spouse? Arguments escalate when we want to be right more than we want to be like Christ.
    2. Remember that as spouses, be completely humble, be gentle, and be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.
    3. Remember that God is the author of consummation.  For men, remember to conquer her heart first.
    4. Marriage is to make us HOLY and not happy. If your goal is happiness you will encounter many disappointments. If it is holy, it will make God happy. Let your spouse have a great life. Let your spouse have a great eternity.

I. Cupboard of Blessings – Eng Si, Hermie Morelos and Carl Fontanilla

img_20151122_111952

Key Takeaways:

    1. When you say thank you, blessings would follow. Believe that you have received it already.
    2. If you are not ready for God’s blessings, you will not receive it.
    3. God will bless you where your gifts are.
    4. Gratitude is the key that unlocks every door. One door to another. What you appreciate, appreciates.
